The
Yonkers East Station Post Office was the subject of an expansion and renovation
project, which increased the available floor space by about 50 percent. As part
of the expansion the existing asbestos roofing system, built-up asbestos
containing felt and tar with gravel ballast, was disturbed. The construction
required the modification of the parapets and it was specified that the existing
roof be removed and replaced with non-asbestos containing materials.
GEA Engineering, Inc. provided the design and Asbestos Project Monitoring and
air quality monitoring during the project.
When
the GEA representative and the Abatement crew arrived at the site on January 15,
1997, the roof adjacent to the north parapet had been removed and the parapet
demolished. The roofing material debris was still present on the roof.
A roofing area strip, about 24 feet long, was abated near the Post Masters
office and the debris cleaned up along the north parapet. This phase of the
project was conducted as a Minor Project under the provisions of 12 NYCRR Part
56-3, In-Plant Operations, and Applicable Variances 83, 90 and 97.The work areas
were inspected after removal and cleanup and were found to be acceptable for the
laying of the new roof.
The environmental air quality samples indicated <0.01 fibers/cc.
